Kylie Minogue is in no way our usual run-of-the-mill star. This international pop icon, in her career spanning more than three decades, has swayed the hearts of millions with her acting and singing prowess. Having launched her 14th studio album recently that debuted at number one on both Australian and UK charts, she has finally opened up about her constant hide and seek with anxiety and how she refused to succumb to it.
“There are a lot of voices in my head. I guess part of that is our brains, they’re problem solvers, tick tick tick tick tick…,” said Minogue, talking about her anxiety in an interview with the Attitude magazine. She said that she would put the kettle on and make a cup of tea whenever she felt anxious. And if she knew the answer, she would do that and her anxiety would go away. “They say that the fast track to happiness is gratitude and it’s true, just think that thought,” she added.
Traditional methods helped deal with anxiety
The 49-year-old star mentioned that traditional methods of healing rather than professional guidance helped her fight anxiety. She further admitted that though counselling would have helped her, it is something she “abhorred”.
Her revelations came as no surprise as she had in the past spoken at length about her mental health. In 2014 the singer had claimed that in real life, she was a different person altogether and did not feel as confident as she is on the stage. She also revealed that getting on with a normal life is easier said than done after a tour performance.
‘Golden’ not heartbreak record
The superstar made it clear that her latest country-inspired album “Golden” was not a heartbreak record though it was written after her breakup with her fiancé Joshua Sasse in 2017. She had accepted earlier in 2018 that she went through psychological and emotional distress post her breakup and even admitted to having a “nervous breakdown” in an interview with The Sunday Times. However, a trip to Thailand with her closest friends helped her cope with the heartbreak.
Minogue is not the first celebrity to have shared her struggle with an anxiety disorder.
